In bringing together some of the country's leading
experts on terrorism from the government, police departments and
universities as well as computer, biological and chemical specialists,
Lawrence J. Hogan , in Terrorism: Defensive Strategies for Individuals,
Companies and Governments (Amlex, Inc., 2001) has composed a veritable
encyclopedia of terrorism. This complete piece of work offers practical
suggestions on how to deal with terrorism and mitigate its impact and
dissects all known international terrorist organizations. Although it
discusses in detail case studies of recent attacks, its most valued
contribution is to allow an understanding of the multiple discipline
approach to prevention and
reaction.

This book comes complete with information on terrorist
groups, personal protection such as: travel warnings, handling your money,
safety when you drive, and when using public transportation, as well as
reporting an overview for countries like Africa , Asia , Europe , Latin
America , and the Middle East area. TERRORISM is a powerful book
detailing works on Chemical & Bioterrorism, Dignity Protection, The
Worldwide Threat, to name a few.
It is lovingly dedicated to the memory of those who have lost their lives through the violence of terrorists.
Because of its contents and what it portrays, I found it very difficult to read, but at the same time I found it interesting. ...[I]t is packed with some useful information. Exactly as it is described a veritable encyclopedia of terrorism, this book's contributing authors include experts on terrorism from such organizations as the government, police departments, universities, computer, medical, biological and chemical specialists. TERRORISM is an excellent resource for everyday individuals such as myself who want to know more about terrorism and its history. Everyone who teaches or who trains for a subject such as this should have his or her own copy of the book.
Highly
recommended.

associated with terrorism and offers suggestions on how to deal with them
and mitigate their impacts. It discusses international terrorist
organizations in every part of the world and lists their terrorist acts,
their estimated numbers and strength, and those countries that sponsor
terrorist groups. Chapters describe terrorism and public policy, the
medical aspects of terrorism, public works and terrorism, the role of
local law enforcement, public information, trends, a history of terrorism,
case studies, person protection and a chronology of significant terrorism
events in the year
2000.

While the pilot may brief you on knocking out a
hijacker, you probably can relax. A sky marshal could be right behind you.
But be watchful and prepared the minute you land, experts warn. How? By
staying cool and following some sound advice says former FBI Agent and
former Congressman Lawrence Hogan. People traveling overseas should begin
protecting themselves before they leave home, said Hogan. There are 20,000
kidnappings for ransom ever year. Most are businessmen, Hogan said.
Business people traveling abroad should leave their Rolex watches and
diamond rings at home. They should blend in. They should use ordinary
cars, not limos. Terrorist groups such as Spain's ETA and IRA factions in
the U.K. have bombed places tourists
visit.

Former Congressman Larry Hogan provided fresh from the
printers, Terrorism: subtitled Defensive Strategies for Individuals,
Companies and Governments. How fresh? The cover features a photograph of
the suicide jet headed for the second World Trade Center tower, with black
smoke billowing and obscuring its twin. In his preface Larry explains the
book was ready to roll off the presses September 11. A stutter-step
enabled history's most terrible example to provide the illustrations for
his subject. The opening chapter, consisting of congressional testimony
given by the CIA's George Tenet, slams home the fact that Washington's
highest levels were aware of the probability of Black Tuesday some form at
least six months before the fact. Speaking this March on the Hill Mr.
Tenet said, Osama bin Laded is still foremost among these terrorists
because of the immediacy and seriousness of the threat he poses everything
we have learned recently confirms our conviction that he wants to strike
further blows against America we believe he could still strike without
additional warning. And bin Laden did, exactly as projected by the head of
this nation's Central Intelligence Agency last spring. Reading through its
contributors 12 analyses and proposals with the knowledge all the material
was prepared IN ADVANCE of Sept. 11, can only serve to increase the
average American's frustration. On the other hand, its lessons simply
could not be more timely for its targeted list: the men and women charged,
at every level, with fighting the war on terrorism, under today's
compelling circumstances. No one involved in the current battle can afford
NOT to read Larry Hogan's
Terrorism.

Ably edited by Lawrence Hogan, "Terrorism: Defensive
Strategies for Individuals, Companies and Governments" is a sober,
serious, and highly analytical survey of the worldwide threat of
terrorism, its various manifestations, history, and trends, with numerous
indexes focusing on terrorist activity in different locations around the
globe. Critical, meticulous, and filled with straight no-nonsense
information by knowledgeable contributors, "Terrorism" is an essential
reading for everyone trying to better understand this very real and
dangerous threat and a highly recommended acquisition for corporate,
governmental and public library reference
collections.

Mr. Hogan has brought together some of the finest minds
in the field to provide an in-depth appreciation for the history,
psychological mindset, weapon availability, and potential acts of those
who would do harm to this nation. Although it discusses in detail case
studies of recent attacks, its most valued contribution is to allow an
understanding of the multiple discipline approach to prevention and
reaction. This team building between responders, some of whom have not
been considered a high priority in the past, strongly supports the
sequential unified command approach to emergency management. It is this
team approach, not single agency dominance over terrorism, that makes this
book so
timely.
