Laborers’ International Union of North America Endorses Governor Larry Hogan

The Hogan for Governor campaign today announced that the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) is proud to endorse Governor Larry Hogan.

LIUNA’s endorsement underscores the historic, bipartisan support for Governor Hogan from a coalition of current and former Democratic leaders, public sector and private sector unions. In addition to LIUNA, Governor Hogan has been endorsed by the United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters, Sprinklerfitters, Welders and HVAC Technicians (UA), the Maryland State Pipe Trades Association (MDPT), Steamfitters & Plumbers Local Union 486, Steamfitters & Plumbers Local Union 489, Fire Sprinkler Fitters Local Union 669, Plumbers Local Union 5, Steamfitters Local Union 602, International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), State Law Enforcement Officers Labor Alliance (SLEOLA). LIUNA counts over 500,000 men and women as members, with 40,000 members in the Mid-Atlantic region which includes Maryland.

“When we endorse a candidate, we look far beyond his or her political affiliation,” said LIUNA President, Terry O’ Sullivan. “What matters is whether or not a candidate supports us in our mission of creating better lives for working families. We are proud to support Governor Hogan’s reelection campaign and look forward to working together to strengthen the livelihoods of middle class workers throughout the great state of Maryland.”

LIUNA’s endorsement is the fourth union that “traditionally backs Democrats in Maryland’s statewide races” that has switched to supporting Governor Hogan. The others are the International Association of Firefighters, the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, and the State Law Enforcement Officers Labor Alliance. Traditionally, LIUNA has endorsed Democratic candidates. In 2012, they supported President Barack Obama. In 2014, LIUNA was the first union to endorse Lt. Governor Anthony Brown against Governor Hogan. In 2016, Secretary Clinton received their endorsement.

“The working men and woman of the Laborers’ International Union of North America have played a fundamental role in building our great state, and it is an immense honor to receive their critical endorsement,” said Governor Hogan. “Our administration has been laser-focused on making Maryland a more affordable place to live, work, and retire, and I look forward to closely working with LIUNA in my second term to keep implementing pro-worker, pro-growth policies.”

LIUNA—the Laborers’ International Union of North America—is the most progressive, aggressive and fastest-growing union of construction workers, and one of the most diverse and effective unions representing public service employees. LIUNA members are on the forefront of the construction industry – a sector that is a powerhouse of 12 million workers producing 5 percent of our countries’ economic output. A half-million strong, we are united through collective bargaining agreements which help us earn family-supporting pay, good benefits and the opportunity for advancement and better lives.
